Questions and answers
What is Pasterail?
Pasterail is a clipboard manager for Mac. It keeps a history of what you copy, so you can find it and paste it again later. The history is encrypted, lives in your menu bar, and only you can open it, with Touch ID or your Mac password.
How do I open my clipboard history on Mac?
Press Shift-Command-V in any app, or click the Pasterail icon in the menu bar. Type to search, choose an item with Return or Command-1 to Command-9, then press Command-V to paste it. You can change the shortcut in Settings.
Is my clipboard history encrypted?
Yes. Every item is encrypted on your Mac with a key that stays in the Secure Enclave and never leaves it. Opening the history needs Touch ID or your Mac password, and a copy of the history files cannot be opened on another Mac.
Does Pasterail save passwords?
No. Copies that apps mark as private or temporary, as password managers do, are never saved. Keychain Access and Passwords are excluded by default, and you can exclude any other app so nothing copied in it is saved.
Does it need an internet connection, an account, or sync?
No. Pasterail has no network access, no account, and no sync, and it has no analytics or tracking. Your clipboard history never leaves your Mac.
Can it save images, files, and formatted text?
Yes. Formatted text keeps its formatting, and web addresses show as links. Images with no file, such as a screenshot copied to the clipboard, are saved encrypted. Files, image files included, are saved by their location only, not as a second copy.
How many items does it keep?
Your 200 most recent items by default, and you can choose from 25 to 500. Copying the same thing again moves it to the top instead of saving it twice.
Does the history lock by itself?
Yes. It is locked when the app starts, and it locks again after the idle time you choose (5 minutes by default), when your Mac sleeps, when the screen locks, and when you switch users. Press Command-L to lock it at any time.
